Project NeighborHealth

Project NeighborHealth was instituted by Willis-Knighton to directly reach out to people in medically underserved areas of the Ark-La-Tex. Project NeighborHealth operates two clinics in Shreveport, WK Community Health & Education Center in the Martin Luther King neighborhood, and WK Community Health and Wellness Center in the Allendale neighborhood in addition to WK Bradley Medical Clinic in Bradley, Ark. Each clinic provides care to patients regardless of their ability to pay. The clinics offer not only access to care but educational opportunities that promote prevention and well-being. The WK Community Wellness Center in the Allendale neighborhood offers a fitness center with low membership rates and is believed to be the first fitness center in the nation which was developed by a hospital to serve a medically-underserved neighborhood. The Children’s Dental Clinic located in the Cedar Grove neighborhood in Shreveport is staffed by volunteer dentists and is available to children who do not qualify for government dental coverage and whose parents cannot afford dental care.

Shots For Tots

Shots For Tots is a community service of Willis-Knighton Health System.  Vaccines are provided by the federally funded Vaccines for Children program.

Children through 18 years of age who meet at least one of the following criteria are eligible to receive VFC vaccine:

  • Medicaid eligible: A child who is eligible for the Medicaid program. (For the purposes of the VFC program, the terms "Medicaid-eligible" and "Medicaid-enrolled" are equivalent and refer to children who have health insurance covered by a state Medicaid program)
  • American Indian or Alaska Native: As defined by the Indian Health Care Improvement Act
  • Uninsured: A child who has no health insurance coverage
  • Underinsured: Underinsured means the child has health insurance, but it:
    1. Doesn't cover vaccines, or
    2. Doesn't cover certain vaccines, or
    3. Covers vaccines but has a fixed dollar limit or cap for vaccines. Once that fixed dollar amount is reached, a child is then eligible.

Children whose health insurance covers the cost of vaccinations are not eligible for VFC vaccines, even when a claim for the cost of the vaccine and its administration would be denied for payment by the insurance carrier because the plan's deductible had not been met.

Please remember to bring your child's immunization record.

Children’s Dental Services

One of the major health concerns for children in our community is the lack of dental care for those not covered by Medicaid or dental insurance. In fact, school teachers and nurses report that many children in our community lack regular dental care. The discomfort and bad appearance associated with poor dental hygiene can affect not only children’s performance in the classroom but also their self-esteem.

Children’s Dental Services was created in 2001 to provide dental care for children who have no dental insurance and whose families are unable to afford dental insurance. All services are provided by local dentists and their staff. Over 57 dental professionals volunteer their time to improve oral health of children in our community. Patients are seen during normal office hours at dental clinics in the Shreveport-Bossier City area.
